Running backs take the spotlight in the Week 16 edition of CFL Weekly Fantasy sleepers.

Last week’s Forty Creek Quadruple Header took a toll on ground pounders, as Calgary’s Dedrick Mills and Edmonton’s Justin Rankin both left the same game with injuries, while Montreal began life without injured breakout runner Travis Theis.

Keep an eye on the CFL Injury Reports for the status of Mills and Rankin, but, for now, consider their backups as potential gems for your lineup.

SHUNDERRICK POWELL | RUNNING BACK | EDMONTON ELKS

ShunDerrick Powell has assured the Elks’ run game will be fine if Justin Rankin is out for a game or two. His performance in the Battle of Alberta rematch displayed his game-altering skills, as he put up 118 yards from scrimmage, scoring 12.8 Fantasy Points in the process. That comes off the heels of the opening game of the Battle of Alberta, when Powell scored a major in his first CFL game and tallied 9.8 FP.

Powell would be facing a tough Toronto run defence that is third in the league in rushing yards allowed per game (89.8), but will still be a solid option if he’s atop the depth chart on Friday. Cody Fajardo should be able to exploit the Argos’ eighth-ranked pass defence, allowing Powell to see clearer running lanes along with being an asset in the Elks’ vertical attack.

LUDOVICK CHOQUETTE | RUNNING BACK | CALGARY STAMPEDERS

Like Powell, Ludovick Choquette was thrust into action in Week 15 when Dedrick Mills left the Stamps’ loss to the Elks with an injury. Having scored a combined 1.4 FP entering the game, Choquette received the most extensive workload of his brief career, rushing for 62 yards on nine carries and finishing with 6.2 Fantasy Points.

Choquette’s fantasy value ($2,500) is enhanced by the fact Calgary squares off against an Ottawa defence that yields a CFL-high 132.3 yards per game on the ground. The combination of the REDBLACKS’ run struggles and Stamps pivot Vernon Adams Jr.’s passing slump opens the door for Choquette to a potentially career-best Saturday evening.

REGGIE BEGELTON | RECEIVER | CALGARY STAMPEDERS

A devastating lower body injury in Week 2 of the 2025 season sidelined him for the rest of the campaign and all of 2026 before the former All-CFLer made his return in Week 15, catching two passes for 25 yards. The Stamps still hold playoff hopes that could be bolstered if the three-time 1,000-yard pass-catcher continues to work his way into the lineup.

Reggie Begelton isn’t going to replace Jalen Philpot as Calgary’s REC1, but the savvy veteran has plenty left in the tank. Ottawa allows a whopping 341.2 passing yards per game and has allowed 24 passing majors, giving the Stampeders’ receiving corps a golden opportunity to rack up impressive numbers. There is value in Begelton, so keep him in mind when filling out either of your receiving or FLEX positions.

GREG BELL | RUNNING BACK | OTTAWA REDBLACKS

Yes, the REDBLACKS’ run defence is bad, but guess who’s eighth? Yup, that would be the Stampeders, who allow 122.6 yards per game on a league-worst 6.0 yards per carry. That translates into a chance for Greg Bell to revert to his 1,000-yard self he showed last season in Hamilton.

Bell has scattered double-digit fantasy efforts this season, with his 13.1 FP in Week 11 against Winnipeg his best outing. If the REDBLACKS can establish a ground game early against the Stampeders, we could see Bell show Ottawa fans why the team invested in him during February's free agency period.
